Safety concerns raised over Neosho wind farm

ERIE — A proposed wind farm in Neosho County continues to draw complaints from opponents, according to The Chanute Tribune. Safety issues were raised recently by one of 45 plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the Neosho Ridge Wind project. The plaintiff complained about a dump truck that dropped rock on U.S. 59 and about work on 80th Road that he said holds up traffic for 15 minutes. He said the wind farm developer, Apex, destroyed $30,000 worth of crops in 48 hours. Apex is building 139 wind-powered turbines to produce 300 megawatts of electricity.

battalion to deploy

PARSONS —  A mobilization farewell ceremony is Saturday for the 329th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) that will be deploying for the first time since it relocated from St. Louis to Parsons, according to The Parsons Sun. The public is invited to the  10 a.m. ceremony at Parsons High School, with a potluck at First Baptist Church at 11. About 70 soldiers will depart to Fort Hood to prepare for deployment to Afghanistan to provide logistics support.

 

Toland visits 

Chanute

CHANUTE — Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary David Toland visited Chanute businesses last month, The Chanute Tribune reported. He toured Chanute Manufacturing, Bridgewood Custom Cabinetry and Consignment, where he took a look at the renovated Kress department store building downtown. 

 

Anderson County plans tax sale

GARNETT — Anderson County officials set an Oct. 10 date for a delinquent tax sale, after many property owners paid their past-due bills following notification that such a sale was pending, The Anderson County Review reported. Initially, 52 properties with some $194,000 in delinquent taxes were due to hit the auction block as of July 9. Since then, 22 properties have been trimmed as owners paid up, returning $45,369.97 to the county.

 

Intersection 

repaired

FREDONIA — The intersection at K-47 and Harper Road, known in Fredonia as Washington and Third Street — closed Tuesday for replacement, The wilson County Citizen reported. The project will detour local traffic for about six weeks. A detour will direct traffic on U.S. 400 through the roundabout to 1000 Road (Golf Course Road) and over to Harper Road. 

 

One injured 

as gunshots fired

PARSONS  — One man was shot in the back as at least 30 rounds of ammunition were fired from two guns last month as a Parsons bar celebrated its one-year anniversary, The Parsons Sun reported. The shots were fired outside PK Bar and Grill, 2106 Crawford, minutes after the bar closed around 2 a.m. Parsons police found about 100 people in the parking lot when they responded. A number of bullet holes were found in the wall of a nearby building. At least three vehicles received bullet damage.

 

Schoolhouse 

dedicated

THAYER — A one-room schoolhouse was dedicated Saturday during the 108th Thayer Homecoming activities, the Chanute Tribune reported. The schoolhouse was moved three miles north and two miles west into Thayer in 2009. Restoration efforts took a decade. The building dates to 1872 and was used until 1963.

 

Sheriff to retire

BURLINGTON — Coffey County Sheriff Randy Rogers announced plans to retire at the end of his term, which expires in January 2021, the Coffey County Republican reported. Rogers was first elected sheriff as a Democrat in 1996. He changed his affiliation to Republican in 2003. He is serving his sixth four-year term.
